HOW MICROSUCTION WORKS

Micro suction is made up of two words: “Micro” refers to the operating microscopes that can either be large floor standing units, or can be incorporated into glasses, in whch case they are known as operating loupes.

“Suction” refers to the medical suction pump that is attached to a tube and a 2 millimetre suction wand, which is used to suction the wax from your ear. Micro suction requires a good knowledge of the anatomy of the ear, along with training in how to safely use the equipment.

Our Clinics

Why Choose Us

Ear wax (cerumen) is naturally occurring in our ears. It is designed to protect our ears against foreign bodies and infection with its antibacterial and lubricating properties.

Those who wear hearing aids, have anatomically narrower or hairier ear canals, or who use cotton buds are more likely to produce a larger volume of wax.

They may require ear wax removal services more often than others. Symptoms like ear pain, dizziness or hearing loss can be indicative of a blockage in the ear due to excess wax.

Since the ears are so sensitive, they require careful attention throughout any ear cleaning procedure.

There are many options for ear wax removal in Harrow, Ruislip, Wembley, Hampstead and Hayes, but microsuction is the safest, most hygienic, and effective of these methods.

Ear cleaning techniques include microsuction, irrigation, candling, syringing and manual instrument extraction.

Other Methods of Earwax Removal

Ear Irrigation (Ear Syringing)

A stream of warm water is gently flushed into the ear to wash out wax. It’s effective for soft wax but not recommended for people with ear infections or perforated eardrums.

Ear Drops

Softening drops, such as olive oil or sodium bicarbonate drops, are used to loosen earwax so it can fall out naturally or be removed more easily later.

Manual Removal

A healthcare professional uses special tools like a curette or forceps to carefully lift wax from the ear canal. This method is precise but should only be done by trained specialists.

Microsuction (Our Preferred Method)

A gentle suction device removes wax safely and efficiently without water. It’s quick, comfortable, and suitable for most people, which is why we recommend it at Cleaner Ears.

Hydrogen Peroxide Solutions

Over-the-counter ear drops containing hydrogen peroxide can help soften wax, but they must be used carefully. Overuse can irritate the ear canal or cause dryness.

Ear Candling

This alternative method involves placing a hollow candle in the ear and lighting it. However, it is not medically recommended as it can cause burns or push wax deeper into the ear canal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Microsuction is a safe and gentle method of removing ear wax using a small suction device and a microscope. Unlike syringing or irrigation, it doesn’t use water, making it the safest option for people with ear infections, perforated eardrums, or after ear surgery.

No, microsuction is generally painless and very well tolerated. You may feel a slight tickling or mild suction sensation as the wax is removed, but it’s not uncomfortable. The suction device can be a bit noisy, especially when removing large wax blockages, but the process is quick and gentle, taking only a few minutes per ear.
Our experienced team at Cleaner Ears ensures you feel at ease throughout your visit. We explain each step before beginning and use specialist equipment to maintain a calm, reassuring experience. Most clients are amazed at how comfortable the treatment feels and how instantly their hearing improves afterwards.

An appointment at Cleaner Ears usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. This includes an initial ear health assessment, the microsuction procedure itself, and professional aftercare advice. During your visit, our audiologists will use a microscope to inspect both ears, explain the findings, and then carefully remove any wax buildup.
We never rush appointments , our priority is your comfort and safety. After treatment, we’ll provide guidance on how to prevent future wax build-up and maintain healthy ears between visits.

Signs of ear wax buildup can vary but often include blocked or muffled hearing, earache, dizziness, ringing (tinnitus), itching, or a full sensation in the ear. Some people also experience discomfort when using earphones or hearing aids.
If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s best to book a professional ear wax removal rather than trying home remedies or using cotton buds, which can push wax deeper. At Cleaner Ears, our audiologists can quickly assess your ears and provide safe, effective removal to relieve your symptoms and improve hearing immediately.
